Normally dedications and ceremony’s such as this take place after someone passes’ on and the community realizes what a great job he or she has done.
Not this time, just ten years ago the Theater Park named after Alan Hitchcock sat boarded up with weeds growing out of the cracks and sat as an eyesore to our beautiful Main Street.
A group of volunteers set out to change that and the end result is what you see today, a vibrant, beautiful part of the “Good life Community” and as of May 13th 2009, dedicated to someone who has given so much to this city, it became “The Alan Hitchcock Theater Park.”
Our City Manager said it best with these words, “Without question, Alan Hitchcock has been a leader of the Good Life Community,” said City Manager Clovis Watson, Jr. “His commitments to providing a strong backbone to the business community while at the same time donating to hundreds upon hundreds of philanthropic causes are a testament to the legacy he carries.”
Hitchcock owned and operated Hitchcock’s Markets for decades until November 2008 and he worked hand in hand with his father Bob Hitchcock in building a North Central Florida supermarket chain.
Alachua’s Main Street has long ago been dedicated as “Bob Hitchcock’s Main Street” in honor of the contributions of the junior Hitchcock’s father and mother Betty.
Alan Hitchcock has continued to deepen the legacy of his father who also gave back to the community at large.
Hitchcock’s Markets has been named Business of the Year twice by the Alachua Chamber of Commerce in addition to dozens of other awards and distinctions Alan Hitchcock has earned. I encourage everyone who hasn’t had time to visit our Historic Main St. to please take the time to enjoy our restaurants, shops and “Alan Hitchcock Theater Park” where more events are planned for the future, “Stay Tuned” it’s only going to get better.
